Some backyards are simply waiting to become something better. The garden at Narrow Neck was one of them – a dated, tired space that had quietly fallen out of step with the life of the home’s inhabitants. The pool area felt heavy and closed in, the deck was tired, and the planting had lost its way. What the property had in spades was potential. GreensceneNZ Landscapes was commissioned to bring that potential out.
The brief was direct: take a backyard that wasn’t working and turn it into one that was. Modern, lighter, functional – a space for entertaining, for family, for the kind of easy outdoor living that Auckland’s climate promises but a poorly designed garden rarely delivers.
The vision centered on opening the space up – replacing dated materials and finishes with a lighter palette and rethinking the pool area entirely around a frameless glass fence that would enhance sight lines while giving the garden a cleaner, more contemporary feel.
Every garden renovation carries its surprises, and this one was no exception. Coordination with neighbouring properties shaped key decisions around delivering pool deck materials – a mid-project recalibration handled without drama. Historical drainage presented its own puzzle, requiring careful investigation before any new work could confidently proceed.
Getting the fall of the new paving right demanded the kind of considered, unhurried problem – solving that separates a good result from a great one. These are rarely the things a client sees. However, they are the things that determine whether a landscape holds up – in appearance and in function – five and ten years down the track.
The finished garden is a significant transformation. The glass pool fence does exactly what was intended – it opens the space, connects the different levels, and gives the backyard a sense of ease and airiness that simply wasn’t there before. Lighter paving tones and a generous deck creates the kind of outdoor room that draws people out of the house and keeps them there.
The planting completes the picture – structured where it needs to be, relaxed where it can afford to be, and chosen with the long view in mind. A garden that will only improve with time.
The project was delivered on a modest budget. The result, by the client’s own account, exceeded every expectation.
